12. Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey (2022)
Genre: Comedy/ Satire
We get introduced to the world of Jaya through a collage of events from her childhood which shows how “CARING” her family is. But later on, the same montage reveals like how Jaya is subjected to casual sexism and misogyny right from her birth. And the way the makers presented the opening of the movie made it clear about the politics they are advocating.
Misogyny, patriarchy, benevolent sexism, domestic violence, the need for equality, colorism, fake feminism, body shaming, modern hate politics, and others are among the topics covered in this film. And the creators deftly addressed those themes without coming across as overbearing, in a way that simultaneously makes you laugh and feel uneasy. The film meets the criteria to be a more mainstream and successful spiritual sequel to the critically acclaimed "THE GREAT INDIAN KITCHEN" due to the same qualities.
The overall tonality of the film is quite interesting, as it alternates between realistic portrayals of domestic abuse and over-the-top comedy sequences. This is especially true when Jaya decides to defend against those who have wronged her; even that is more of a cathartic experience. The movie's characters, who are all deeply ingrained in the patriarchal culture of Malayali families, give us access to rich psychological profiles that can be examined. And the actors did a good job of conceiving and portraying each of these characters. Basil and Darsana in particular deserve praise for how naturally and truthfully they internalised the characters.
In addition, the film can brag about an excellent use of metaphors such as Rajbhavan and cashewnut, to name a few. The director also employs several effective cinematic tropes, such as a running commentary between fights, which is absolutely hilarious to witness.
Overall, Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya He deserves a standing ovation for handling such a sensitive subject in a humorous and intelligent way without undermining its gravity and becoming an effective antidote to all the misogyny that is present. The creators are at least making an effort to bring about change.
My opinion: Highly Recommended.. worthy for an easy re-watch.
